Ribbons Knot

Instructions

Participants will

  • Work together to weave and then un-weave a knot

Participants will develop

  • Cooperation skills
  • Patience
  • Spatial awareness

Materials

  • Ribbons (you need half the number of ribbons as there are people in your group, it may be good to have a few extras) – it’s best to have a variety of colours.

Before you start

Cut the ribbons to a reasonable length. They should be of equal length, long enough to use for the activity, but not so long they’ll get tangled accidentally. Make sure you have a large clear space. If you have a large group, it may be best to go outside.

What to do

  1. Split everyone into groups of 6 – 8 people.
  2. Stand each group in a circle with ribbons laid across like spokes of a wheel with each end by a person. People pick up the end of a ribbon and ‘weave’ a knot (within 3 – 4 minutes) without letting go.
  3. When the group is satisfied with the knot, they place it on the ground with the ends visible.
  4. Individuals from another group pick up the knot and reverse the process without letting go of the end of the ribbon.

The task can be made more complex by asking the groups to work in silence!
