How the London Region Woodcraft Folk Committee Works

The London region committee meets around 4 times a year. In this blog we’ll describe how
the committee works, the kinds of things we do, and how you can get involved too.
Since the pandemic, our committee meetings are now fully remote – we currently use
Microsoft Teams. This makes it easy for people to attend and solves the problem of having
to find a venue for an in-person meeting. However our annual general meeting (AGM) is still
in-person.

The AGM is usually in February or March and one of its purposes is to elect the members of
the committee. These include:

  • Chair: responsible for running meetings
  • Vice chair: a stand-by in case the chair is unavailable
  • Secretary: responsible for organising meetings and administration/communication
  • Treasurer: responsible for finances
  • Minute taker: takes minutes during meetings and shares them afterwards
  • DF liaison: a DF to link us to DF committee and activities
  • Members: other representatives from London region districts who regularly attend meetings

We welcome anyone from London region districts to attend committee meetings – it’s a great
way to find out what’s happening in the region, and other people’s thoughts and contributions
are always valuable. You can attend as a one-off with no commitment. As with much of
Woodcraft Folk we’re all volunteers, and taking up a role can be a great way to gain
real-world experience of helping run a committee. We’re also very happy for young people to
be involved, and take up a “shadow” role where you assist the existing person in a role,
which is a low-pressure way to learn about the role and better prepare for taking it on in
future.

The topics we regularly cover on committee include:

  • Events, such as camps, activity days, social events, attending protests, training and more
  • Communications, such as the Londoner newsletter, social media updates, and this blog!
  • Finance, including the London region bank account, fundraising, and financial support
  • Sites such as Cudham and others that London region districts regularly use
  • How London region districts are doing, any problems they are having, and what we can do
    to support them
  • What is happening nationally (including a report from General Council), how it affects
London region, and representing the London region at the national level

We’re happy to cover any issues that affect London region districts – you can request that we
add something to the agenda for discussion, or if it’s brief, bring it up in “any other business”
at the end of the meeting.

We’re currently looking for a new chair to take over from Ashley at the next AGM early next
year, as well as a DF liaison. London committee is also involved in organising London
regional camps, and we’re currently considering summer 2027 for our next event. If you’re
interested in helping, or just want to attend a meeting, contact us at
london@woodcraft.org.uk and we’ll let you know the details.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all London committee members for their help
running the region! Feel free to drop in to a meeting and say hello. We’ll be publishing more
updates on this blog in future, so stay tuned for more news.
