Climate Literacy Training

Do you want to make your outdoor adventures more sustainable and climate-resilient?

Join us for a free, practical training day designed to help camp organisers reduce the environmental impact of their activities while preparing for the challenges of extreme weather and climate change.

The training day is taking place at our Biblins Youth Campsite on 20-21 September from 10am.

What to Expect:

🌱 Expert-led presentations on carbon literacy
🤝 Small group workshops for discussions and peer to peer learning
🛠️ Hands-on, practical activities on site with additional scenario based activities
🌍 Tailored advice for low-impact camping

The weekend will be a mixture of workshops and learning by doing – we are going to see it, feel it, eat it and do it during our stay at Biblins. There is an opportunity to camp overnight from Friday 19th and to spend Sunday participating in bushcraft and other educational activities with like-minded folk. Accommodation in bell tents is available for those who want it. All food and refreshments will be provided.

Perfect for camp leaders, volunteers and outdoor educators working with young people.

This interactive session will give you the tools and confidence to embed sustainability and climate resilience into your planning without compromising on the fun. The training sessions will address the following themes:

  • Transport: Encourage carpooling/shared transport, use public transport, choice of venue
  • Food: Prioritise plant-based, local and seasonal food options,
  • Energy: Use renewable energy sources where possible, reducing consumption
  • Waste: Promote recycling, composting and reducing single-use plastics
  • Water: Encourage water-saving practices
  • Climate adaptation and resilience: Planning for and managing more intense weather events and the associated risks.
  • Nature and emotional connection to space: Minimise the impact of the camp on the surrounding environment and wildlife. Programme opportunities and benefits of allowing engagement with nature.
  • Local community: Respecting and connecting with the community, its environment and heritage.

The event has been designed to give participants the following outcomes:

  • An awareness of the carbon, environmental and social costs and impacts of camping activities, that combine to make our camping footprint
  • Increased understanding of practical approaches that reduces the footprint of residential camps, and the confidence to take action/start their journey
  • Developed a peer support network, which encourages experimentation, sharing of learning and problem solving within and across organisations
  • Inspired after experiencing a fun and skills based showcase of practices
