Decarbonisation Team Update

The Decarbonisation Team is a Woodcraft Folk group which the members involved help monitor and reduce the carbon emissions produced at camps, centres and districts, and they are always looking for new members.

The team have recently been involved in a number of wide-ranging projects to help national Woodcraft Folk with their decarbonisation targets. One way is by creating a carbon footprint, this is a difficult ongoing project due to the size of Woodcraft Folk. The team is also currently updating the camp handbook “Have a good weekend” to a version which will include decarbonisation, this is to make sure decarbonisation is considered at all camps no matter of size.

The Decarbonisation Team is excitingly involved in the international Camp100, involved in aspects down to the layout of the site, this ensures everything is considered as the littlest change can make a big difference to the environmental impact. One of the ways in which the team have helped is by supporting the Production Team for Camp100 in assisting the choice of eco-friendly ways to produce energy at the camp such as how to power the fridges and which generators to use. Another way is in the programme, such as helping the Programming Team find NGOs to run workshops to educate campers on decarbonisation. The team is lastly helping to keep the camp sustainable in its food too, this can be done through helping choose suppliers and menu choices.

Centre level projects are ongoing too! The team is in touch and involved with Woodcraft Folk’s centres to create a more sustainable way to run camps. The biggest update is the recent solar panel, inverter and battery installation at Biblins (shown below). The team are applying for grants to allow for more installations like this at other centres, as well as for solar panels at Camp100.

Whilst the team is small, it is always busy running multiple projects at different levels of Woodcraft Folk. Decarbonisation covers so many areas, so there is a role for everyone. If you would like to join the team to help run any of these projects, start your own, or just to find out more please contact decarbonisation@woodcraftfolk.org.uk
