Update from Scotland - Reaching out in 2018

Friday, 4 May 2018

 In February 56 members of all ages from across Scotland got together at our annual Scottish Gathering.  We congregated at Crianlarich for workshops on Inclusion, Outreach and Publicity, the Woodcraft Folk Scotland AGM and some general networking and socialising.  We want to share this film produced from a series of short films created by young members who took a crash course in film making and editing over the course of the weekend.

Reflecting on discussions at Scottish Gathering, and in support of the Widening Participation Agenda  developing at UK level Scottish Committee decided that our theme for 2018 will be Outreach and Widening Participation.  We planned a series of events around this theme for the year ahead;

Engaging Venturers at National Level:  Scotland has a successful programme of engaging Pioneers at national level through our ‘Gatherings of the Smalls’.  This will be continuing and in addition this year we will be reaching out to engage Venturers at a national level.  We hope this will support our groups with recruitment and retention.  A preliminary meeting between Scottish Committee and some Venturers took place in March and a bigger national Venturer event is being planned for June.

Widening Participation in Summer Camp: Scottish Summer Camp is happening from 7th to 14th July and we aim to address outreach and widening participation through encouraging more young people whose parents or carers aren’t part of Woodcraft Folk to come as unaccompanied children, facilitating day visits for members of local Woodcraft Folk groups and facilitating a camp open day for local groups and local people.

Sharing practice in Outreach and Widening Participation: In November we will hold a Scotland wide event in Edinburgh on this theme.

Another busy year ahead – we look forward to seeing results in the form of a bigger, more diverse and more democratic Woodcraft Folk Scotland as we move into 2019.
