Snowed in at Lockerbrook

Monday, 19 January 2015

Plans for the Lockerbrook Management Committee (LMC) meeting go awry as adverse weather hits overnight in January.

Members of the committee at Lockerbrook woke up to beautiful white covered landscapes, freezing temperatures and

glorious sunshine. A group had gone up a day earlier to undertake much needed maintenance at the centre but were surprised to find cars, buildings and pathways covered in a deep layer of snow after a cosy night sleeping in the cottage.

Whilst half the committee were stranded at our wonderfully remote centre and the other half were at the bottom of the track, unable to get up as nearby roads were closed.

But this Lockerbrook-loving lot were not deterred! They wrapped up warm and worked together to grit the way, shovel two tyre tracks for driving and clear snow drifts. Almost three hours and a lot of cooperative action later, the group were finally holed up, thawing out and plied with caffeine in a nearby cafe for their meeting!

Do you love Lockerbrook, too? Would you have grabbed a shovel and joined in? Then we need you to join our team of committed volunteers to support Woodcraft Folk's home in the Peak District!

- Do you have a few hours each month to spend helping maintain, develop and improve the centre? - Could you join our LMC to strategically lead and manage Lockerbrook?
- Would you like to join our crew of volunteer wardens to support groups to make the most of their centre bookings (and you also get to stay in the cottage on site)?

If so, please contact the Chair of the Lockerbrook Management Committee, Will Knight by emailing

We also have lots of exciting one off volunteering roles coming up too, such as Elfin sleepovers, gardening, decorating and lots, lots more so please get in touch if you could help us out with these too. "
