Scottish Gathering 2020

Sunday, 1 March 2020

50 members and young people from Edinburgh, Falkirk, Camelon, Stirling, Glasgow Southside, Glasgow East End and Glasgow Kelvingrove met for our annual Scottish Gathering weekend and AGM at the beginning of February. Crianlarich youth hostel is situated near hills and woodland and was an appropriate backdrop to our camping and outdoor adventures programme theme, ahead of Common Ground International camp and other summer activities this year.

Workshops included “Camping the Woodcraft Folk way” and “Leave no trace” outdoor activities as well as a Common Ground question and answer session. Young people took part in a ‘Gathering of the Smalls’ discussing youth involvement in decision making and how to have more say in all aspects of their Woodcraft Folk life.

The children’s programme included games and crafts themed on bugs, birds and animals, using natural materials and making toy boats. Outdoor activities culminated in a campfire with marshmallows and baked bread twists.

Our AGM saw some new people elected to Scottish Committee, a slideshow of highlights from 2019 activities across Scotland, and a movement update. There was also a facilitated discussion talking about the UN summit on the global response to the climate crisis, COP26, coming to Glasgow later this year and whether as an organisation we should join the coalition of civil society organisations getting involved.

Everyone got stuck into their clan duties with some lovely food prepared such as cake and chocolate sauce. On Saturday evening there was a merrymoot of performances, songs and music before a few ceilidh dances. On Sunday there was an optional local walk before we all headed our different ways.

Comments gathered included, “Loved getting new outdoor activity ideas”, “LOTS of ideas for on camp and for group nights”, “The Smalls were fun, engaging and inspiring” and as a result of coming, “Putting skills I learned to good use”.

We are looking ahead to a unique year with the trial of the Glasgow hub for Annual Gathering, organising and supporting around 80 Scottish members to attend Common Ground in Kent, and COP26 activities, alongside training and skill share events, district camps and hostel trips. And we shall go singing to the fashioning of a new world!
