Online Common Ground 2020

Thursday, 13 August 2020

It was great to see and meet some of you during Virtual Common Ground last week!

Thanks to our fantastic volunteers from Woodcraft Folk, IFM-SEI, and other member organisations, we were able to plan many informative, engaging and fun sessions for children and young people of all ages on topics including feminism and gender equality, media bias and fake news, sustainability and friendship. Our online Common Ground resembled some of the traditions of an international camp, we had an opening ceremony where people from across the world joined us to bring greetings to begin our camp! We also had some evening programme including an under 10s disco and a drag disco - both had fantastic playlists! This gave everyone a taste of what sorts of things will be happening at our ‘real’ camp in 2022!

We did our best to make sessions available to our international friends outside the UK, and we were very happy to have people joining and helping us from Belgium, Spain, Senegal, and Colombia.

If you weren't able to attend the sessions, you can re-watch some of them here, in the On Demand section of our Dream Big At Home website.

Also, check out what the Media Centre has been up during last week! This is a fun virtual Common Ground news flash made by one of our young Woodcraft members Gracie. There were also some archive Media Centre videos from previous international and national camps that we shared to encourage new Media Centre content. We will hopefully be putting together a Common Ground News video to share with all about what we got up to over our virtual week!

We hope the sessions helped in keeping each other connected and in building international links of friendship and solidarity across borders during these difficult times.

Again, a big, big thank you to all the volunteers and people who participated who made Virtual Common Ground possible.

Of course, seeing each other on screens cannot replace singing around a campfire and playing fun games in a big open... Which is why we are really looking forward to seeing you all at Common Ground in 2022!

With friendship and solidarity,

Common Ground team
