New Partnership with Sense in Glasgow

Monday, 24 November 2014

Volunteering Makes Sense !Sense Scotland and Woodcraft Folk are joining forces in an exciting new project in Glasgow's Southside.  This project aims to provide children with complex needs and learning disabilities the opportunity to participate in a new Woodcraft Folk group based at Sense's Touchbase facility in Glasgow.

Sense Scotland received a grant from Children in Need to support the children and young people they work with to access new opportunities.  Having initially used the grant to develop a Brownie Pack based in Touchbase they then approached Woodcraft Folk about developing a new Woodcraft Folk group.

The first meeting about the project took place in May 2014.  the focus to date has been on building the partnership, and on volunteer recruitment for the new group. A volunteer information day took place on Sat 25th October.  The next step will be for Sense and Woodcraft Folk to run a joint training day for volunteers in January 2015 with the hope that the group will be ready to launch early in the new year.

Susan McMaster,Community Links Manager for Sense Scotland in Central Region will be the key member of staff supporting the development of the new group.  Susan said of the collaboration; " Woodcraft Folk and Sense Scotland share the same values."  She continued; " This project is right up our street.  The purpose is for us to be more inclusive with children, help them grow in confidence and have fun."

Clare Ritchie, Scottish Officer (Maternity Cover) for Woodcraft Folk and Jethro Lennox, District Co-ordinator for Woodcraft Folk's Glasgow Southside District are Co-ordinating support for the new group on behalf of Woodcraft Folk.  Clare said ; " This is a fantastic opportunity for everyone involved."   Jethro added "We are really excited about the prospect of starting a new group in the Southside of Glasgow in conjunction with Sense Scotland.  The existing group will provide support for the new group and do all they can to help make this partnership a success."
