Tuesday, 25 February 2014

Dear Member

You may be aware that an article in the press last week revealed that the DfEE have issued new guidance to schools, suggesting that they use volunteers to stay open during the teachers’ strike planned for 26th March. General Council believe that this is an underhand way of undermining the ability of Trade Unions to negotiate on behalf of their members.

Waltham Abbey and Harlow Woodcraft Folk enjoyed a rather muddy winter ramble in January.

Over 30 adults and children met early Sunday morning in the lashing rain at Epping Forest. Destination – bikers’ tea hut at high beach where our soggy group munched away on bacon and sausage sandwiches and drank steaming hot chocolate.

The puddles were orange from the clay soil - so Essex! And wellies filled with water and stuck in the mud. A fun day was had by all. (Well most…)

Brighthelmstone projects

Saturday, 1 February 2014

Brighthelmstone District has initiated a couple of projects over December 2013 and January 2014.

The first was initiated by one of our groups in Woodingdean near Brighton. Nomad Pioneer leader Mark Hedgecock obtained 200 saplings of various trees and organised a planting in Lockwood Park. Lots of Elfins, Pioneers and adults braved a horrible rainy day to plant all the trees with the help of the Sussex Wildlife Trust. It was a great success and covered in local media.
