Members & Supporters Update April 2021

Friday, 30 April 2021

Pip (General Council Chair) and Debs (CEO) hosted a Supporters and Members Update on April 23rd 2021. Since the start of the pandemic Debs and Pip have been hosting quarterly updates for all members and supporters seeking to keep everyone informed of the ongoing impact of COVID and of Woodcraft Folk's recovery plans. The sessions have been a useful way to gather feedback and the pair plan to continue to host the sessions to celebrate the achievements of the movement.

During the session Debs shared that Woodcraft Folk's income had reduced by 51% during 2020 matched by a reduction in expenditure by 53%. Like many organisations Woodcraft Folk has benefited from COVID relief funding and has reduced costs by taking advantage of the furlough scheme, but despite all of this ended the financial year with a small deficit of £15k across the whole organisation. Debs also reported that currently the organisation faces a further deficit in 2021 as we await the lifting of restrictions which currently prevent our residential centres welcoming groups.

The session highlighted some good financial news, including new grant funding from BBC Children in Need, Ernest Cook Trust and Jack Petchey Foundation.

Pip thanked all of Woodcraft Folk's centre volunteers and staff who continue to maintain the centres and have successfully adapated them to welcome household and family groups. Bookings are now being taken at Heightgate, Cudham, Lockerbrook & Biblins. We hope to be able to welcome youth groups to our centres as soon as restrictions are lifted.

And finally, during the update members and supporters were informed about the wide range of projects Woodcraft Folk's young people, volunteers and staff are currently engaged with, including:

  • Kids Got Rights
  • Green Influencers Scheme: green social action
  • Ingenious: engineering solutions to the climate emergency
  • Youth Leaders Collective
  • Building:Up: supporting the transition from participant to youth leader
  • #iwill Bereavement
  • Social Action clubs with the Co-operative Academy Trust
  • Holiday Activities & Food projects
  • All Change: climate science education
  • YOU:WEEN: women and the green economy
  • #GetToActTogether; education and democracy in youth organisations
  • Journey of Youth Leadership
