Members & Supporters Update, April 2021

Tuesday, 20 April 2021

This latest members and supporters update has been circulated to all those who support Woodcraft Folk's work.

Supporters update

During the pandemic Pip and I began to host online member & supporter updates, something which we have now committed to doing quarterly as an effective way to share news and encourage questions from those with an interest in the Folk.

The latest update is scheduled for 6:30pm on Friday 23rd April. Joining instructions can be found here. During the session Pip and I will share information about the Folk’s:

  • Finances

  • Projects & programme

  • Staffing

  • Future plans

Pip and I welcome all supporters and adult members to join un. You are actively encouraged to ask questions. I do hope you can join us. If you are not able to attend a recording of the session will be made and shared through our newsletter.

Centres update

Woodcraft Folk’s centres are still experiencing COVID restrictions but have reopened to family and household groups following Step 2 restriction easing. You can now rent Heightgate, the bungalow at Cudham, the cottage at Lockerbrook and camp at Biblins.

As restrictions continue to be lifted we hope to welcome youth groups and schools back to our centres as soon as permitted.

Our plans for a summer camp for Pioneers and Venturer Camp continue to make progress.

New staff & full time volunteers

Following a staff restructuring exercise last Autumn and successful project fundraising we are excited to welcome a number of new faces to our staff and full time volunteer team:

  • Barbora joined the staff team on April 19th on a full-time European Solidarity Corps (ESC) placement for 5 months during which time she will be supporting communications activity

  • Eireny will join the staff team on April 26th as the Jack Petchey funded Youth Engagement (intern) supporting project activity and inclusion activity in London and Essex

  • Ivan and Frederica will join the Biblins team in early May on a 4 months ESC placement

  • Andy will join the staff team in July as our new Head of Centres

We are currently recruiting for a new Cudham Centre Co-ordinator and a Common Ground Camp Assistant, for more information please visit www.woodcraft.org.uk/vacancies Please note the closing date for these posts are the 29th & 25th April.

Volunteer recruitment campaign

In March Woodcraft Folk launched a social media volunteer recruitment campaign in partnership with 360 Recruiting. The campaign has reached over 20,000 people in the first 2 weeks of the 6 month campaign. Activity has included:

  • Sponsored social media adverts

  • A short film produced by Speedwagon Productions (thanks Milo from Hackney)

  • Regular online volunteer induction training sessions

We are really excited that we have been able to start placing volunteers with local groups and have received a number of new group enquiries.

New projects

As well as the volunteer recruitment campaign we have also been able to launch a number of new projects, including:

  • Kids Got Rights an international project exploring Children’s Rights which will involve Pioneers in assessing their experience of their rights, an awareness campaign and some lobbying to address rights which the Pioneers feel are not being respected

  • Green Influencers Scheme working in Leeds and Bradford to support children and young people to develop green social action projects

  • YOU:WEEN another international project looking at women in the green economy, exploring and addressing barriers experienced by women

Our Ingenious project, which supports engineers to share engineering solutions to the climate emergency, continues and has been delivering sessions in local Woodcraft Folk groups and schools across the UK.
