Glasgow Southside new Pioneer group for 2013

Sunday, 6 January 2013

This year promises to be an exciting one for the Glasgow Southside Woodcraft Folk groups. A new Pioneer group is starting this term for ten to twelve year olds and as a result for the first time ever children of all ages will be able to come to Woodcraft Folk activities in the Southside of Glasgow. In previous years there was just one group in the area and for the last couple of years, an Elfin (6-9’s) and a Venturer (13-16’s) group. It is great to be going into 2013 with 3 groups planned.

The adults and children from Glasgow Southside attended an extremely successful hostel weekend away at the start of December 2012. Sun, snow and ice was enjoyed on the West coast of Scotland in Inverary. Highlights of the weekend included an icy walk up a local hill, rice crispy cake baking, a group challenge of re-writing festive tunes with Woodcraft Folk words and an entertaining quiz that included jokes and craft activities. True to woodies spirit the final winning clan was unknown and most participants were just interested in what questions they got right (or what the correct answers were).

At the weekend event the adult volunteers agreed that we would start a group for 10-12 year olds. This would help bridge the gap between the current Elfin and Venturer groups. The new Pioneer group programme looks very exciting and consists of activities such as Burn’s night baking, a night walk and ‘I belong’ badge work. Combined group events will be a countryside walk, a sleepover and also attending the Scotstoun family Ceilidh in February.

The Elfin (6-9 years) and Pioneer (10-12 years) groups meet every Wednesday 5:30-6:45pm at Shawlands Reformer Church Hall, 111 Moss-side Road, Shawlands.

The Venturer group (13-16 years) meets every Tuesday 7-9pm at Shawlands Academy.
