 A Great Celebration

Over 200 woodcrafters and friends turned out to Stratford Circus on Saturday 15th November to celebrate 80 years of Newham Watersmeet Woodcraft Folk. The event featured local band Rags Rudi, traditional ceilidh dancing with the Muckers and films and live performances from the elfins, pioneers and DFs. Ages spanned from youngest members Alice and Elsan (3) to the oldest member, Irene Poole who joined up in 1934 when her parents established the first Newham group.
Newham Woodcraft have spent 2014 doing 80 Great Things and were greatly relieved that they had successfully survived the challenge. From ensuring that everyone that wanted to could attend camps and residentials (regardless of income) to producing three short films and taking an active part in community and borough wide events the children and young people, leaders and friends from the past 8 decades were justly proud to celebrate with a group cry of “I’m a Woodcrafter “ , one of the challenges set back in the Pioneers Pea Fair of November 2013 by the children and young people!
Members and young people planned the event, provided entertainment on the night, whilst the DFs compered the entire show and two venturers helped create the fantastic (and delicious) birthday cake. The event was made possible by grants from Awards for All and Newham’s Let’s Get the Party Started.
Chair Suzannah Walker thanked all present for their input over the years and sent out a challenge to the young members present to take on the task of organising 160 years young in 80 years time.Although some of the DFs were heard to mutter that they would have a trial run for the 100th birthday first!
