Celebrating the #PowerOfYouth this #iWill Week!

Monday, 18 November 2019

This #iWill week is time to celebrate the #PowerOfYouth, especially our Woodcraft Folk members who are taking part in social action through their Pioneer, Venturer and DF groups across the country.

Earlier this year we announced our funding from #iWill and the High Sheriff's Award Scheme via Cambridgeshire Community Foundation which allowed us to put on two successful social action events in the Eastern Region. We held a Bushcraft and Social Action Day back in April, followed up by the 'World We Want To See Camp' in early May.

At the camp 53 participants got stuck in to thinking about the change they want to see in the world, and then making a start on being that change! During a 'hackathon' activity some of the young people created a video about the issues which matter to them most - head on over to our social media channels from the 18th November to see what they said!

We learnt a lot from that project and have built upon that to make plans for even more youth-led social action. So today we are delighted to announce that we've been awarded £5000 from Hertfordshire Community Foundation to take those plans forward.

In Spring 2020, we'll be running a 'Change Our World' weekend in Hertfordshire aimed at Venturers, DFs and young kinsfolk to develop facilitation and project planning skills to help them create their own social action projects, but also facilitate social action activities for their peers. Shortly after, with the help of some of those attendees, we'll be putting on an 'Explore Our World' activity, also in the county aimed at Elfins and Pioneers and crammed full of education for social change activities!

If you're based in Hertfordshire or want to travel to join in (it'll be fairly accessible to those in Eastern, Midlands or London regions), you can register your interest in taking part by emailing pippa@woodcraft.org.uk and you will be amongst the first to hear about the exact event details once they are confirmed. You don't need to be a current member, if you're aged between 10 and 20 and live in Hertfordshire and would like to take part in one of these events as your first Woodcraft Folk experience, we'd also love for to hear from you!
