Bushcraft Camps @ Woodcraft Park Farm 2013

Wednesday, 10 July 2013

Following the recent work day at WPF and thanks to the efforts of members of Walton, Hounslow and Spelthorne Districts, the new bushcraft area is now ready to start camping.

The camps will be open to Pioneers and older and participation will be limited to 30 participants, so get in quick! We also need plenty of leaders to volunteer, for the camps to run smoothly.

The camps will be held at our very own Woodcraft Park Farm, in Lurgashall, West Sussex. The first camp will be Friday 30th August to Sunday 1st September. The cost for the weekend is £16.00.

We will camp in tents on the edge of the woods and will do the bushcraft activities in the new bushcraft area within the woods.

Activities could include:-

  • Wide games – participants could create new ones or bring along old favourites.
  • Exploring the natural environment of Woodcraft Park Farm – nature treasure hunts may be a way of doing this.
  • Wood craft – whittling small personal items like tent pegs, spreaders, forks, spoons, whistles, elder bracelets and necklaces. Making larger items for the new cooking and communal area like roll top tables for food preparation and washing up, chairs for sitting around the fire and tripods, Billy hangers and galley racks for cooking over open fire.
  • Fire lighting – collecting correct materials for tinder, kindling and burning wood. Choosing the best type of open fires for small group and large communal cooking.
  • Cooking – how to cook over open fires, healthy eating, camp hygiene, collecting and preparing wild food.
  • Shelter building – erecting bivouacs and hammocks, constructing benders, arcs and dens to sleep in the wild.

Safety training, instruction and rules will be given before any children are allowed to practise any of the higher risk activities. We have full risk assessment documents.

If any participating leaders have further activity ideas, please let us have them.

If any parents would like to join us for these camps they are very welcome.
There will be a further Bushcraft Camp at Woodcraft Park Farm from 4th – 6th October 2013.

Final details and an equipment list for this event will follow, but participants will need suitable clothing and equipment.
