Burning the Clocks 2018

Monday, 14 January 2019

This yearly celebration of the Winter Solstice on 21st December in Brighton had the theme 'Remembrance' this year. Brighton Central and Hove District decided to remember refugees/asylum seekers/migrants who bravely make sea crossings to get to a place of safety. Little did we know how important and relevant this would be, by the day of the event, when quite a few little boats bringing asylum seekers had crossed the channel and landed just along the coast in Kent. Our big lantern boat with the remembrance message led all the little boats, which fanned out behind. A Pioneer remarked that it was "good to help people who were struggling" and another said that we put "a Woodcraft twist" on the remembrance theme.

Check out our great video below of us all in procession!!

On the 12th December the Venturers also organised a District Treasure Hunt on the seafront. It was bitterly cold but with members bringing along their pennies we managed to raise over £78 for asylum seekers by filling in an outline of a refugee boat.
