Blue Skies Camp

Wednesday, 22 August 2012

You may have heard that this summer Woodcraft Folk tried something new – we mixed experienced leaders, young people interested in leading groups, and new groups of children and parents – all at Woodcraft Park Farm. If you’ve played Woodcraft Crumble, you’ll have an idea of what it was like. Our aim was to match up the young people who wanted to develop their skills with the people who already had those skills, plus the children who would enjoy the games run by the new young leaders as they practised what they’d learned.

It’s exciting to be able to write that the innovative ‘Blue Skies’ camp was a success. The sun shone, children played and leaders laughed (both the established ones and the brand new ones).

At the start of the week, young leaders from across the Woodcraft network (Bradford, London Districts, Leicester, Knaphill & Portsmouth) gathered at Park Farm to explore values and learn the skills of a group leader. Experienced members ran sessions on co-operative games, putting our aims & principles into practice, debating techniques and much more.

Debs McCahon explained that the camp was the first of its kind, and designed to be a practical, hands on experience in which young people would learn and practise games, explore techniques for raising issues in the group and really identify how to achieve ‘Education for Social Change’ as a young leader.

As the young leaders grew in confidence, they were joined by adults new to Woodcraft Folk, and were able to share their knowledge and learning by organising the camp’s children’s programme. One new adult leader commented on how amazed she was at the confidence and talents of the young leaders, some as young as 13.

The organising team are evaluating the camp and writing up all the sessions, which will be shared with the wider movement online and in print very soon. Next year’s Blue Skies Camp is already taking shape in our imaginations!

In the meantime, other training opportunities for young leaders include:

  • 12th - 14th October - ‘Learn 2 Play’ Bristol YHA
  • 23rd - 25th November - ‘Learn 2 Play’ Cudham Environmental Education Centre
  • 10th & 11th November - ‘Bored Meetings’ Bristol YHA
