Joe Wyatt – Group Support

I would like to introduce myself: I’m Joe Wyatt and I’m the new Development Officer focusing on Group Support. So who am I? I’m a 25 year old who lives in the Guildford area. I became involved in youth work when I became a member of the UK Youth Parliament at the age of 17, since then I have become more and involved in youth voice and youth rights. I’ve been through all the stages, participant to young leader to volunteer then finally a full time worker, where I worked for 3 years as a participation worker at UK Youth.

I first came into contact with Woodcraft at a practice sharing weekend in Cudham and was so impressed by the charity, impressed not only by the personal links to the values of Woodcraft but also the strength of the youth voice and youth participation in the charity. So when the role was advertised out, I jumped at the chance to join. I applied for the role and now I’m a week into it and learning fast.

My Role:

  • Action Projects -where young people (10- 18) can apply for £500 to run a community linked project to promote the aims and principles of Woodcraft. For more information  either email me or visit http://www.woodcraft.org.uk/action-projects
  • Twinning – I’m sure lots of districts are already doing this in one way or another but we are looking for district that wish to share or learn with other district or even just want to learn about different areas of the country. If you would like to get involved please get in touch.
  • Hands In! 2013– After the creation of some impressive quilts the Tree Steering groups has decided that this year they want groups to create and place Geocaches. I’m personally very excited about this as a keen Geocacher myself. If Geocaching is new to you find out more here:  http://www.geocaching.com/videos/#cat=cat:newbies&vid=-4VFeYZTTYs
  • The TREE programme - Doing general TREE activities such as training and events
  • Group Support – The most important I’m here to support all Woodcraft groups big and small, from Exeter to Newcastle. If you need any help or support let me know and I will do what I can to help.

In my spare time I play Ultimate Frisbee (A Very Woodcraft sport if you ask me) and even manage the Under 20 Great Britain team. Recently I have re found my obsession with geeky board games; sadly not all of them are co-op games. So I’m sure when you see me around there will be a Frisbee or portable board game close by.
